Below are common topics that arise during NorthLawn applicant interviews and what the suggested responses are. Of course, feel free to share in your words.
💵 Financial
‣
- 20% of every project performed through NorthLawn goes towards the Community Fee.
- (In case asked: 20% of the total project value is the same as 25% on top of the consultant’s fee but it’s easier to explain in this way)
- The majority of the Community Fee goes back to community members as part of revenue sharing
- The “Client Owner” is the member who brought in the project. They get a portion of the project’s Community Fee not just for that project but for all future projects done with this client. This is done to recognize the significant lifetime value of the client to the Client Owner.
- The other portions of the Community Fee are split based on how much work is brought in or performed in the community. (Yes, the person working on the project participates in revenue sharing).
- In order to prevent freeriding, a member either needs to bring in or perform work over $2500.
- Revenue sharing is gathered and paid out every 6 months.
- We’ve already distributed thousands in revenue sharing in 2023 and are under contract to distribute thousands again during H1 2024 to qualifying community members.
‣
- In our first 6 months, NorthLawn had 3 confirmed projects without having done significant client development. For 2024, we’ll be ramping up our client development pipeline to bring in even more opportunities for members.
- To be transparent, and while we plan for it to change in the future, NorthLawn should not yet be the sole source of income you rely on.
‣
- We are extremely broad on the types of projects that NorthLawn does. It can range from more “traditional” due diligence projects to more custom projects like helping a climate tech startup write their technical white paper.
‣
- In short, yes. NorthLawn has the infrastructure to allow you to work on international projects.
- NorthLawn does not sponsor visas so international work will likely need to be done remotely unless you have an existing work permit.
🏘️ Community composition
‣
- The NorthLawn community is global. Our members are primarily from the US and Canada; however, we also have community members in
- Australia
- UK
- Portugal
- Poland
- UAE
- Italy
- India
‣
- We decided early on to select our community based on exceptional people rather than narrowing on a specific industry or function.
- However, we found there is clustering of expertise around a few areas:
- Tech (AI, security, data science, analytics)
- M&A / finance
- Sustainability / impact-based topics
‣
- There is no preference.
- We have members who were former McKinsey Business Analysts and a former McKinsey Senior Partner.
- We have members who were part of large consulting firms (primarily McKinsey) and others who were part of more niche consulting firms.
- Some of our members have been independent consultants for many years and others are just starting out.
💼 Logistics
‣
The full process is as follows:
- All interested candidates complete a membership invitation request form.
- Selected candidates conduct a short interview with a NorthLawn member to learn more about your background, share what we are doing at NorthLawn, answer questions, and ensure it's a good mutual fit with the community.
- NorthLawn's Member Circle then makes a decision to extend an invitation to join the community.
- After extending an invite, you are onboarded into the NorthLawn community.
‣
- No. As of now, it’s free to join.
- The community can decide collectively later about collecting fees to do group purchasing.
‣
- While there is no fee to join, as you read through the Good Standing Policy, there is an expectation that members support each other and the community at large.
- The amount of time members spend on NorthLawn varies but a good assumption is 1 hour every 2 weeks by participating in a Circle and responding to other members questions (and asking your own).
‣
- We primarily communicate using Slack and the Google Suite
‣
- No this is not an option.
- Projects are only available to NorthLawn community members and overall NorthLawn should not be viewed as only a job board.
